Resurrecting Balhae: A Digital Homage to a Lost Civilization

Ziwan Li's Character Design Merges History with Fantasy

In an ambitious blend of art and history, designer Ziwan Li brings the ancient kingdom of Balhae back to life through a captivating character design project. This award-winning series is a testament to the power of digital art in reviving lost cultures.

The kingdom of Balhae, which thrived over a millennium ago, has been resurrected through the imaginative lens of Ziwan Li. This character design project, set in 926 CE, follows the fictional narrative of Junghyae, an apprentice, and her mentor, Master Yoo, as they embark on a mystical journey. Their mission to banish spirits from the shallow seas of Gyeru village is a narrative vehicle that showcases the rich cultural fabric of Balhae, interwoven with elements of fantasy and historical authenticity.

Li's creative process is rooted in extensive research, drawing from academic literature, paintings, and sculptures to accurately depict the era. The project's strength lies in its detailed pencil sketches, brought to life with the digital prowess of Procreate and Photoshop CC software. These tools allow for a vivid reimagining of Balhae's cultural identity, blending the tangible with the speculative.

Each character design stands out as a unique piece of digital art, with dimensions of 127 cm by 127 cm at 300 dpi, ensuring high-quality visuals. The designs are not just visually striking but also serve as a functional storytelling medium, inviting viewers to explore the depths of Balhae's history and the artist's interpretation of its cultural nuances.

The challenge faced by Li was formidable, given the scarcity of surviving artifacts and detailed accounts of Balhae's culture. However, by synthesizing data from neighboring civilizations and engaging in informed speculation, Li has crafted a credible and compelling representation of this vibrant society. The result is a series of character designs that not only captivate the eye but also pay homage to the historical significance of Balhae.

This project, conceived and realized over two months in Los Angeles, has earned the prestigious Iron A' Digital Art Award in 2024, a recognition of its design excellence and innovative approach to cultural storytelling. Ziwan Li's work stands as a powerful example of how digital art can bridge the gap between history and contemporary creative expression, offering a window into the past that is both educational and enchanting.

With intellectual property rights secured for each image, Li's designs are protected as unique contributions to the world of digital art. The project, featuring images such as "Master Yoo Traveling Outfit" and "Apprentice Junghyae Ritual Outfit," showcases the potential of character design to transport audiences to another time and place, making history accessible and engaging for a modern audience.
